Woon H. Jyung PhD, a cherished educator and devoted family man, passed away on March 29, 2025, in Toledo, Ohio at the age of 91. Born on March 12, 1934, in South Korea, Woon dedicated his life to the pursuit of knowledge, education, and the betterment of those around him.
For over thirty years, Woon passionately taught biology at the University of Toledo, culminating in his final fifteen years as the esteemed chairman of the Department of Biology. His contributions to the academic community extended beyond the classroom, as he was known for his kindhearted nature and willingness to assist students, particularly those from other countries who pursued their studies far from home. Woon's impact as an educator was profound; he inspired countless students and earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues through his integrity and dedication to his field.
Woon's academic journey began at Seoul National University in South Korea, where he demonstrated a tireless work ethic and commitment to learning. He later moved to the United States, where he attained his PhD at Michigan State University, specializing in Botany. His academic achievements were a source of great pride for him, particularly his ability to secure research grants for the University of Toledo, which underscored his determination and expertise.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Woon will be remembered for his endearing personality. He was honest, kind, hard-working, and generous, traits that deeply influenced the lives of those fortunate enough to know him. He embraced life's simple pleasures, often spending his free time playing golf, gardening, and helping his wife, Kay Jyung, in their vegetable garden—a reflection of his love for the outdoors and nurturing nature. Despite being raised as a Buddhist back home in South Korea, Woon became a Christian here in Ohio after being warmly invited to church by some dear friends.
Woon’s legacy of love extends to his family, with whom he shared a deep bond. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Kay Jyung, son Dr. Robert Jyung, and a host of extended family in South Korea. He was preceded in death by his son Earl Jyung, whose memory will remain in the hearts of loved ones.
As we honor Woon H. Jyung's life, we celebrate a man whose compassion and dedication touched many. His legacy will endure through his family, his students, and all who had the privilege of calling him a friend. A memorial service will be scheduled soon.
