Winfield "Marty" M. Vernier, a devoted educator, loving family man, and passionate community member, passed away on January 26, 2025, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Born on February 8, 1949, in Toledo, Ohio, Marty lived a life rich with dedication, warmth, and humor.
Marty earned his Bachelors of Education, Masters of Education, and Education Specialist degrees from the University of Toledo. For 35 years, he taught Social Studies and Government at Whitmer High School, where he was deeply respected by students and colleagues alike. His commitment to education extended beyond the classroom; he announced football, basketball, and soccer games for the Whitmer Panthers, demonstrating his love for sports and community spirit.
A proud veteran, Marty served in the United States Navy, showcasing his commitment to his country. He was an intelligent and engaging individual who had a keen interest in politics and a love for sports. His personality resonated with those around him—he was funny, silly, and had an immense love for children, particularly his cherished grandchildren.
Marty derived joy from various hobbies, including tending to his yard and landscaping, creating beautiful outdoor spaces that brought him peace. He also found fulfillment in singing in the choir at his church, a testament to his deep faith and community involvement.
Marty’s legacy will be cherished by his loving wife, Louetta Vernier; his daughters Melissa (Tom) Bell and Kari Vernier; his grandchildren Karter Hine, Ava Bell, Sadie Bell, and Daya Windless; and his sisters Beth (Tom) Chevalier and Heidi (John) Fillion. His family will always remember him as a source of love and laughter.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Winfield and Elizabeth Vernier, and his sister Vicky, all of whom he holds dear in memory.
Marty's final days were spent surrounded by his loving wife, daughter, and grandson, reflecting the deep bonds he nurtured throughout his life. His impact on the lives of others, particularly students and family, will be felt for generations to come.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 6, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home - West Sylvania Chapel at 3655 King Rd., Toledo, Ohio. Additional visitation is scheduled for Friday, February 7, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at St. Michael's Lutheran Church 5790 W. Temperance Rd. in Ottawa Lake, Michigan, followed by a funeral service at the same location from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. A burial will take place at Whiteford Union Cemetery at 12:00 PM, concluding the day’s services.
As friends and family gather to honor the life of Winfield "Marty" M. Vernier, they will remember him not only for his contributions to education and his community but also for the love and joy he brought into their lives, ensuring that his spirit will continue to shine brightly in their hearts.
