William R. Smith

William R. "Bill" Smith, age 83, of Toledo, passed away peacefully Saturday, May 20, 2017 at Ebeid Hospice Residence. He was born on October 22, 1933 to Charles and Waneta Smith in Toledo. Bill graduated from Woodward High School in 1951. He got his Bachelor's Degree in Education from Toledo University in 1955 and then went on to obtain his Master's Degree. Bill was also a veteran of the Ohio Army National Guard. He married Suzanne F. Weiss September 17, 1955 and they celebrated 47 years of marriage before her passing. Bill was employed with Monroe Public Schools, retiring in 1993 as the Deputy Superintendent. He was an avid Detroit Tigers and University of Toledo sports fan. Bill was a member of the Downtown Coaches Association which he attended regularly until recently. He was also a member of the Rocket Club and proudly contributed to UT Athletics. Bill was an active member of Fairgreen Presbyterian Church and of the Mountaintop Great Banquet Ministry. He loved traveling to Siesta Key, Florida every spring. Bill enjoyed reading, gardening and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Suzanne Smith; brother, Robert Smith; and sister-in-law, Mary Smith. Bill is survived by his loving daughters, Dianne (Harold "Chip") Montri and Patricia (Frederick) Nordhoff; grandchildren, David Montri, Michael Montri, Emily (Scott) Rhodus, Amber (Mike) Conant, Rachel (Fred) Minkowski and Derek Nordhoff; great-grandchildren, Brooklyn, Jacob and Peyton Montri; brother, Walter "Bud" Smith; best friend, Andy Hill; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

The family will receive guests on Tuesday from 2 – 8:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 W. Laskey Rd., Toledo (419-473-0300). Funeral Services will begin on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at Fairgreen Presbyterian Church, 3220 W. Laskey Rd., Toledo, with visitation from 10 – 11:00 a.m. at church. Entombment will follow in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.
