William N. Thomas, Jr.

William N. Thomas, Jr. age 64, of Toledo, passed away peacefully Thursday, January 13th, 2011 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg. He was born April 12th, 1946 to William and Ruth (Roberts) Thomas, Sr. in Toledo. Bill was a graduate of Scott High School and went on to graduate from the University of Michigan with a double Major in Math and Physics. Bill continued his studies receiving his Masters Degree in Math and Education from the University of Toledo. He began his teaching career with Toledo Public Schools teaching at Libbey High School for several years. Bill went on to become a Professor teaching Developmental Math Studies at the University of Toledo, Scott Park Campus and also at the main Campus on Bancroft. In all, Bill taught for more than 30 years with enthusiasm and a love of sharing his knowledge with many talented and successful students. He also spent several years consulting with different Universities and Charter Schools working on Developmental Programs and Studies. In addition to his love of Math, Bill used his advanced computer skills while consulting with Houghton-Mifflin Publishing Company (currently known as Cengage) to author and publish software to accompany Math and Health textbooks.

Before retiring in July of 2010, Bill held memberships with several academic groups, such as NEA (National Education Association), AMATYC (American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges), NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) and many others. He was held in high regard by these groups and was invited to speak at and host several of the gatherings throughout the U.S.

Bill was a devoted husband, father, son, brother and friend and was very active in his church, Providence Reformed Baptist Church. He also enjoyed spending time in his garden with his loving wife, Connie, as well as walking to stay healthy and spend more time outdoors. Bill also enjoyed traveling throughout the Unites Stated as a child with his family, something he continued to do with his wife and daughter. When it came to music Bill enjoyed several kinds, but Jazz was what made up most of his music collection.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth, who was the Head of the Math Labs with TPS and William Sr. who was an Attorney, held in high esteem. Also preceding Bill in death was his brother, Michael Thomas. He is survived by his dear wife of 30 years, Connie (Baumert) Thomas; his daughter, Charity (Robert) Marshall and his sister Susan D. Thomas. Bill's kind spirit and warm heart will also be remembered by many extended family members and dear friends.
