William J. Upham, age 82, of Toledo, passed away, Saturday, June 27th, 2009 at Lake Park Nursing Home. He was born July 1, 1926 to Willard and Zaida (DuBell)Upham in Toledo. Bill began his employment with the railroad at the age of 14, as a "call boy" and continued for the next 48 years until he retired in 1988. The lines he worked with over the years included the Pennsylvania Line, NYC, B&O, C&O and the former Detroit-Toledo Shoreline Railroad. Bill served as a General Chairman of the United Transportation Union, appearing in front of the U.S. Supreme Court. He enjoyed traveling, fishing and spending time with his family and friends. Bill was also a U.S. Navy veteran serving his country proudly during WWII.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John Upham and sister, Catherine King. Bill is survived by his loving wife of almost 62 years, Florence (Cutcher) Upham; children, Mike (Joy) Upham; Susan Upham; Robert (Susan) Upham and Linda Woodard; 12 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; sister, Rita Thorton and many loving nieces, nephews; in-laws and dear friends.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Resurrection on Tuesday, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral, Collingwood Blvd at Islington Ave. Officiating will be Fr. Charles Singler. Interment will follow.
