William E. "Bill" Hartman, a kind, fun-loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather, age 85, passed away peacefully on November 25, 2012 at Spring Meadows Senior Community after an extended illness.
Born October 30, 1927 in Toledo, Ohio to William and June (Hicks) Hartman.
Preceded in death by his parents and sister, Lois Seedorff, and his little buddy Molly.
Bill graduated from Libbey High School and was a WWII Veteran of the U.S. Army. He worked for Monroe Systems for Business as a Service Repairman for 38 years.
Bill was a life-long learner and pursued many creative interests and activities. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Adams Township Post 553, a former member of the Maumee Valley Yacht Club, where he participated in many sailing events winning a number of trophies; the Flying Tigers RC Model Club, Maumee Valley Model Boat Club, the Swanton Railroad Club, the Traveling Promenaders Square Dance Club and Black Swamp Dulcimer Gathering. As a long time member of several traveling bowling leagues, Bill's highest score was 299.
Bill had an adventurous spirit which took him and his wife, Virginia, on many vacations from coast to coast and points in between. He was a master wood craftsman and created many beautiful pieces of furniture. He could fix or build anything and was always willing to lend a helping hand.
He is survived by his loving wife, travel navigator and square dance partner, Virginia, of 61 years; son, William Hartman, Jr. (Karen); daughters, Becky Martin (Dan) and Barbara Lewis (Jim); grandchildren, Jessica, Joe, Kevin, Ross, Troy, Matthew and Shannon as well as three great grandchildren.
The family truly appreciated the kindness of Bill's many caregivers from Spring Meadows Senior Community and Accessible Home Healthcare.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Honor Flight of Northwest Ohio or Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
The family will receive guests Sunday, December 2, 2012 from 1:00 p.m.- 3:00 p.m. in the Newcomer Funeral Home, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd., Toledo (419-381-1900). A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
