William W. Dombrowski, Jr.
July 4, 1929 – October 19, 2018
William W. "Bill" Dombrowski, Jr., the "Maestro" has set his Earthly baton down as he has gone to Heaven to conduct the choir of Angels. Bill was born at home on July 4, 1929 to Genevieve and William W. Dombrowski, Sr. and passed away at home in Temperance, Michigan with family by his side on Friday, October 19, 2018.
Bowling was a huge part of his life, receiving numerous league high averages, high series awards and at the age of 69, rolled his personal best game of 299. At the age of 87, he bowled in the USBC Open Championship in Las Vegas. Bill was a past President of the Toledo Chamber of Commerce Bowling League.
As a golfer, he was a fine pick up for any scrambles event, as he had a deft touch with the pitching wedge and putter.
Fishing for walleye and perch on Lake Erie was also big for him, and if they came back with a "limit" of fish, you were guaranteed to be reminded of the truth, that he was personally responsible for the majority of the fish that were put into the cooler. The family would like to thank his friend Merlin Withrow for his involvement in making it possible for him to go out in a boat to fish, as recent as four months ago.
Bill loved to play cards, some poker, but mostly Port Clinton Rummy, which was played for a penny a point, but the way he played it you'd think was for much, much more. Gardening in the summer and visits to the casino in the fall were among his other loves.
Bill graduated from DeVilbiss High School in 1947 and joined the U.S. Air Force the same year. In his four years of service, he was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska and Fitzsimmons Hospital in Denver, Colorado where he met and married his wife, Shirley. They were married for 51 years before her passing on May 28, 2003.
Bill had a long business career in the paint and wallpaper industry spanning decades. He opened and managed the Lake Shore Paint Store at Miracle Mile Shopping Center and worked for Dean and Barry Paint Company of Columbus for 31 years. Bill also spent time in Findlay, Ohio and returning to Toledo, serviced paint stores at Great Eastern, Miracle Mile and Southland Shopping Centers. After retiring in 1993, Bill continued working part time in the paint business. He was also a member of the V.F.W. Post 2898 Auxiliary, Toledo and Sylvania Moose Lodge 1579.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his sister, Geraldine Pugh and feline friend, Taz. Bill is survived by his daughter, Beverly Ann (Mark) Benner; sons, William Andrew (Rebecca) and Vincent Thomas (Margaret) Dombrowski; sister, Marilyn Brooks; grandsons, Jason (Caroline), Vincent Jr. (Bridget), Michael, Raymond (fiancé, Rachael), Steven, Walter Eric Dombrowski; great-grandson, Noah; great-granddaughters, Lauren, Clara and Amelia; all of whom he loved dearly; and numerous nieces, nephews, step-grandchildren and many friends.
The family will receive guests on Wednesday, October 24, 2018 from 3 – 8:00 p.m. at Newcomer – Northwest Chapel, 4150 W. Laskey Rd., Toledo (419-473-0300) with VFW Post 2898 Auxiliary Services at 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Funeral Services will begin Thursday, October 25, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home. The family extends its heartfelt thanks to Hospice of Michigan including nurse, Stephanie Leggett and aides, Katherine Kerr and Holly.
In lieu of flowers, "I know" dad would want memorial donations made to VFW Auxiliary 2898 Relief Cancer Fund, 3925 W. Alexis Rd., Toledo OH 43623 or Hospice of Michigan.
