 Walter Edward Kanavel, age 85, of Lambertville, Michigan, passed away January 26, 2025, at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center. Walter was born March 31, 1939, in Toledo, Ohio, to the late William and Esther (Hensel) Kanavel. 

Walter’s educational journey began at Bedford Senior High School, where he laid the foundation for a lifelong pursuit of knowledge. Walter served honorably in the United States Air Force, from which he retired in 1978 after a distinguished 22 years of service. His commitment to duty was only matched by his dedication to his community as a substitute teacher for Bedford schools. Walter took immense pride in educating young minds and fostering a love for learning among his students. Following his service in the military, he continued his studies at the University of Toledo, earning a Bachelor’s Degree that would enable him to inspire countless students. 

Walter was actively involved with the American Legion, post 192, where he demonstrated his leadership skills, having served as past commander three times. His contributions to the organization reflected his unwavering commitment to veterans and their families, as well as his desire to give back to those who shared similar experiences. In addition to his service and dedication to education, Walter had a multitude of interests that showcased his vibrant personality. He was an avid reader, embracing literature throughout his life, and enjoyed cooking delicious meals for family and friends. Walter had a passion for golf and relished the opportunities it provided to connect with nature and enjoy friendly competition. His love for travel allowed him to explore new places, creating lasting memories along the way.

Walter will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy lives on not only through his contributions to his community and country but also through the lives he touched as an educator and friend.

Those left to forever cherish his memory are his two children, Katrina (Steven) Keith and Miguel Kanavel; grandchildren, Kristen, Janice, Michelle, and Catherine; seven great-grandchildren; siblings, Hendrick Kanavel, Patrick Kanavel, Mari Fidele, Laura Kanavel, Keith Kanavel, Meeghan Kanavel, and Tammy Kanavel-Wilkinson; and numerous other family members and loved ones.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara (Waters) Kanavel; two daughters, Beth Ann Kanavel and Gretchen Grady; sister, Carla Bierman; and a brother, Eugene Kanavel.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.
