Walter Edward Kanavel, age 85, of Lambertville, Michigan, passed away on January 26, 2025, at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center with his children and grandchildren by his side. He was born on March 31, 1939, in Toledo, Ohio, to the late William and Esther (Hensel) Kanavel.
Walter’s lifelong dedication to service began at Bedford Senior High School and continued through an honorable 22-year career in the United States Air Force, retiring in 1978. Following his service in the military, he continued his studies at the University of Toledo, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Russian Studies.
A proud member of the American Legion Post 192, Walter served as post commander three times, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to supporting fellow veterans and their families. His leadership and dedication left a lasting impact on the organization and the community.
Beyond his military service, Walter lived life with enthusiasm and curiosity. He was an avid reader, a skilled cook, and a dedicated golfer who loved the game, regardless of his score. He had a love for poker and never missed an opportunity to share one of his terrible jokes, much to the delight of those around him. More than anything, his family, especially his grandchildren, absolutely adored him and spent time with him every chance they got, cherishing his warmth, humor, and wisdom. Walter will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy of service, leadership, love and kindness lives on through his family, friends, and the many lives he touched.
He is survived by his children, Katrina (Steven) Keith and Miguel Kanavel; grandchildren, Kristen, Janice (Javan Wilkins), Michelle, and Catherine; great-grandchildren, Corrina and Noah Price, Gabriel and Theodore Wilkins, Ava, James, and Caterina Johnson; and his siblings, Hendrick Kanavel, Patrick Kanavel, Mari Fidele, Laura Kanavel, Keith Kanavel, and Tammy Kanavel-Wilkinson, along with numerous other beloved family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara (Waters) Kanavel; daughters, Beth Ann Kanavel and Gretchen Grady; sister, Carla Bierman; and brother, Eugene Kanavel.
A memorial service honoring both Walter and Barbara will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at 2:00 PM at the American Legion Post 192, 620 W. Temperance Road, Temperance, Michigan 48182. A luncheon will follow.
