Walter D Smith "Smitty", 86 years old went to be with the Lord on August 10, 2013 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. He has been a resident of Foundation Park Alzheimer's Care Center for the past five years. He formerly lived on Michigan Street in Toledo. He was an avid NASCAR fan and did some racing himself in his younger years. He worked at various companies such as Autolite, Libbey Glass, and Hilfingers until he started his own business of Smith Builders Home Improvements in 1965 from which he retired in 2007. Walt was a veteran of WWII and a member of many organizations, but he was the proudest of being a grandparent.
Walt leaves behind his loving wife of 45 years, Judy (Rickman). He also leaves his sons Walter Darrel of Toledo, David (Maureen) of Sylvania, Maj. Edward (Shilo) of the U.S. Air Force, daughter Mary Beth (Lonnie) Zervos of Sylvania and grandchildren Chandler Smith, Alyssa and Cooper Zervos. Walter also leaves behind his brothers Wm. "Clyde" of Toledo, Cecil (Frances), Maynard (Julia) of Waynesboro, TN along with sisters Pearl Wallace, Mary Nell (Jimmie) Pierce and sister-in-law Robbie Smith all of Waynesboro, TN. Also surviving are his in-laws Joyce (Roger) Hall of Memphis, TN, Charles Rickman and Nancy (John) Ory of Toledo as well as many nieces and nephews.
Walt was preceded in death by his parents Wm. Louis and Myrtle Smith of Waynesboro, TN, along with brothers Guy and Louis Allen and sister Ruby Keaton of Waynesboro TN, father-in-law Edward Rickman, sister-in law Vera Smith and daughter-in-law Teresa Smith of Toledo.
Visitation will be held at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 W. Laskey Road in Toledo on Wednesday, August 14 from 2 to 8 PM with burial services to be held in the funeral home on Thursday, August 15 at 10:30 AM. Interment will be at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park, officiated by Rev. Brian Dunn.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes for donations to be made to Alzheimer's Association of Northwest Ohio or to Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
