Vivian Ruth Hartzell passed away March 20, 2025. Born December 14, 1933, to Gaetano and Lilly (Fischer) DeChristopher. She lived all her years in west Toledo, graduating from Scott High School. She worked many years in healthcare including medical records, x-ray and nuclear medicine technology at the Toledo Clinic, Flower Hospital, Toledo Hospital and Mercy Hospital. She spent eleven years after retiring working as a dental office receptionist until her longtime friend Pat told her to “give that job to a young person who actually needs it"!
The crafts and hobbies she enjoyed ranged from sewing , crocheting, knitting, canning, candle making, and photography. Many people have received a gift of jam, candles, baby booties, sweaters or afghans made by her. She enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles, playing Yahtzee, Scrabble and late in life Mah Jong.
She learned to snow ski and ride motorcycles in mid-life and these trips as well as many road trips in her cars took her across the country with family, old friends, as well as new ones she met along the way.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Mary Ellen Mizelle, and Ethel May Trimmer. Vivian is survived by her children from her marriage to the late Dick Hartzell: Christopher (Paula), Elaine (Steve Mollica), Nancy (Tom Mylander), Daniel (Lori); seven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
Any errors in spelling and/or grammar are those of the author, who fully expects editing from the beyond. There is also hope that the length is appropriate as it was Vivian’s opinion that Mr. Hartzell’s obituary written years earlier was “so short.”
The family will receive guests Friday March 28th from 5-7 p.m. at Newcomer Northwest Chapel: Laskey Road,Toledo Ohio. A memorial service will be held Saturday March 29th at 11:00 a.m. at Faith United Lutheran Church 4543 Douglas Road, Toledo OH 43613.
In leu of flowers, please consider memorial donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
