Treva E. Redman

August 3, 1930 — January 9, 2024

Born August 3, 1930, near Newark, Ohio, passed away January 9, 2024 comfortably under hospice care in Maumee, Ohio. A widow from husband Lee Redman since 1994, she is survived by son Jeffrey Redman, daughter Deborah Rondon (husband Mark and sons Matt and Luke), daughter Pamela Atherton (husband Russell and son Gerald), her sister Virginia Gutridge, and many nieces and nephews.

True to her zodiac sign of Leo, Treva was socially outgoing, adventurous, creative, independent, and just a little bit stubborn.

Treva grew up on farms in central Ohio, learning to garden and preserve food, sewing, cooking and baking, raising sheep, learning to drive a horse (gee-haw) to pull a plow and hay wagon, and driving a manual stick shift car. She played clarinet in the school band and was the pitcher on the girls' softball team.

After school Treva worked at the Holophane glass factory in Newark and married Lee Redman in 1950. They moved to southern California when Lee was drafted into the Marines during the Korean war. She loved the warm weather and the Rose Bowl parades. She bonded with other military wives and taught some "city girls" how to cook, including how to cut up a chicken. Their son Jeffery was born there. They moved back to Ohio after the war and lived in a number of towns as Lee's job progressed. Daughters Deborah and Pamela were born in Ohio.

Treva moved from Copley, OH with husband Lee and 3 children to (the then semi-rural) Rochester Michigan area in 1965. As the kids moved into middle school Treva took a job at the local D&C (5 and dime) store in downtown Rochester and later at the Hunter and Mortons Pharmacies as a clerk, pharmacy tech, and fitting medical appliances and mastectomy supports among other duties.

Treva enjoyed traveling, seeing much of the US with her husband including Hawaii and Alaska. She later took tours with friends to Europe and Great Britain, and widely cruised seeing the sights of the Caribbean, the Panama Canal, France, and the Mediterranean, Aegean, and Scandinavia countries.

A widow since 1994, Treva moved to the new Barrington Circle condominium complex in Lake Orion, Michigan in 1996. She was always busy, maintaining and decorating her 3-level condo and the surrounding flower beds. She likely lived longer due to the constant stair workout! She never fully mastered the art of cooking for one, so often invited condo friends over to share a meal, a dessert, or a glass of wine.

Treva took up the "snowbird" life, driving for 20 winters down to Gulf Shores, Alabama to enjoy the warmer weather and the ocean-view ambiance. She made many new friends by joining snowbird clubs, going out to dinner, and over to Mobile for Mardi Gras events. She also took up golf at age 65 and played in golf leagues both in Alabama and Michigan as long as she was able.

Treva was a collector and a crafter. She collected lion themed jewelry and sculptures, displayed antique glassware and fruit plates, and acquired or crafted holiday decorations. She collected wine corks from many of her cruises and created cork wreaths, trees, and trivets galore. If you knew her, you probably got one of her many cork creations.

Treva loved to go shopping at the Meadowbrook Mall and often returned sporting a new manicure and pedicure color. Until nearly her 93rd birthday she continued to drive her own car to shop, not waiting for someone to take her to Meijer or Kroger and even to Costco where they would pump the gas for her! She would pick up a grocery cart and push it around the aisles as part of her exercise. During one of her last Costco runs a very little boy pointed at her and pronounced "THAT'S OOOOLD!" to which Treva laughed and replied "and you're YOUNG!"

Just before her 93th birthday, Treva fell at her home. A legion of friends from the condo complex came to her aid and we will always be grateful for their help and on-going concern. After a stint in the hospital and then failing to thrive at home it was discovered she had also broken her pelvis compressing nerves in her spine. She was transferred to a well-respected rehabilitation facility Glacier Hills near Ann Arbor MI. I bitterly note that Glacier "Hell", as we came to call it, and Medicare's contractor Livanta likely hastened her demise through poor pain management and premature discharge as multiple appeals for longer care were all denied.

In the meantime, we found a lovely and caring senior assisted living home, packed up some of her own furniture and cherished items, and moved her to Maumee Point in Maumee Ohio. As predicted, with little strength and stability built up from rehabilitation, she soon required spine stabilization surgery. She entered an excellent rehabilitation facility, Kingston in nearby Perrysburg, OH. Although they encouraged her with multiple therapies, all these setbacks had ultimately taken their toll leaving her weaker and weaker. Asking to be "let go" she went back to her own bed in Maumee Point, under the care of Careline Hospice and the continued wonderful care from Maumee Point staff. She was comfortable to the end for which we are very grateful.
