Thomas R. Burke

March 8, 1960 — March 15, 2021

Thomas Robert Burke, 61, of Toledo, left this world on March 15, 2021 after a courageous fight with COVID at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center. He was born March 8, 1960 in Summit, NJ to Leo and Claire (Bannon) Burke.

After graduating from Teterboro School of Aeronautics, Tom worked for Petroleum Helicopter Inc. in Louisiana on the Gulf of Mexico for over 40 years. He began as a helicopter mechanic, eventually being promoted to a supervisor position. After speaking with many of his coworkers these past few weeks, words they used to describe Tom were, mentor, teacher, always ready to help and assist, stubborn, funny and friend.

Tom's interests included flying, woodworking, cooking, helping family when asked, taste testing a variety of beers and lots of it! He really loved boating and fishing. Just recently, he said when I retire in a year I want to go to my brother Paul's house and go fishing. His immediate family would describe him as a generous, very down to earth, loved hanging out with family and friends, story teller, huge heart and very stubborn. But most importantly, everyone will remember Tom was a big responsible kid who liked to have fun and loved to laugh!

Left to cherish his memory is his best friend and wife of 21 years, Susan Bahnsen Burke; step-daughter, Tara (Jon) Peace; two grandchildren, Kayleigh and JJ Peace; and his beloved pup, Lily Ann; siblings, Patricia (Neil) Oldfield, Margaret (Tom) Grendon, Ann Burke Baker, Paul Burke; and many nieces and nephews.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents.

The family will receive guests Monday, March 22, 2021 from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions - SW Chapel, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd. (419-381-1900), where Funeral Services will begin at 4 p.m. For the safety of the Burke family and their guests, masks are required along with social distancing.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lucas County Board of MRDD in Tom's memory.
