Therese Kathleen Hoffman

September 13, 1955 — October 4, 2022

Therese Kathleen (Dillon) Hoffman, age 67, of Toledo, lost her battle with leukemia on October 4, 2022.
Therese was a Lourdes University professor for thirty years, retiring in 2019. Before that, she was a proud UAW member working on the assembly line at Jeep Corporation in the 1970's and 80's. With the help of the tuition assistance program, she completed her Bachelor's degree in Psychology at the University of Toledo and fulfilled her ambition to become a sociologist by completing her Master's and Doctorate degrees at Bowling Green State University.

Therese had a rewarding career as a sociology professor at Lourdes University, Sylvania, Ohio. A popular teacher, and a two-time recipient of the Teaching Excellence Award for which she was nominated yearly, she taught a wide range of courses, served as the Chairperson of the Sociology and Justice Studies Department for a decade, and was instrumental in the success of many major university initiatives.

Whether teaching in the classroom, delivering a paper at a conference, speaking in the community, or working with a student organization, Therese was academically and personally passionate about issues related to diversity, unearned privilege, and social justice. In recognition of her passion, she received the Woman of the Year Award from the University's Diversity Awareness & Action Committee.

Therese found great pleasure in spending time with her family and precious grandchildren, especially at the family cottage. She was also an avid reader, loved the opera and enjoyed traveling overseas. Her travels included Mexico, Lebanon, Egypt, Israel, China, Thailand, Bhutan, and India. More recently, Therese found solace in art.

Therese is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Richard; children, Angela Hower and Robert Hoffman; siblings, Linda (Michael) Subleski, Bethany (John) McCormick, and David Dillon; grandchildren, James Baker, Lauren Hower and Mary Hower; sisters-in-law, Sally Pocs and Laurie Troutman; nephews, Tyler (Mary) Troutman and Sean (Allyson) McCormick and nieces, Lisa (Robert) Hill Slusarski and Holly Troutman. Therese will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
