Thelma Washington

March 22, 1926 — August 15, 2022

THELMA LEWIS WASHINGTON was born to the late Robert and Lillie Mae Lewis on March 22, 1926 in Sylvester (Worth County) Georgia. She was educated in the Worth County School System. During her young life hard work was required in order to survive. Her upbringing was her playbook to her strength and work ethic. Her family values and the love of the Lord was instilled in her and she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and joined Coverdale Baptist Church.

THELMA relocated to Toledo, Ohio in 1949 and married the love of her life Joseph H. Washington Sr,. Upon arriving to Ohio, she joined Greater St. Mary's Missionary Baptist Church under the founding Pastor Israel Walker. She was a member of the Mass Choir. After the passing of her late husband she began to work at various dry-cleaning companies in order to support and raise her young family.

THELMA was quiet and strong willed, who said what she said and meant what she said and her discipline proved that. She enjoyed reading, studying her Bible, reading her monthly Upper Room subscriptions and listening to Gospel Music.

THELMA's existence lasted for 96 years and she was Blessed to have great health (medicine free) and lived independently for 95 years; and received her last driving license in 2017 at 91 years old.

THELMA leaves to cherish her legacy and memories to her seven children: Daughters: Iris Cuffie, Helen Andrews, Darlene Washington; Sons: Carlton, Joseph (Marcia), Andrew Leroy (Michelle) and William Washington;
21 Grandchildren; 57 Great-Grandchildren and 26 Great-Great Grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Special Nephew and Caregiver Terry Lewis; Honorary Son: Paul Coogler; Special Friends: Mr. and Mrs. Felton Jackson and Laura Potete.

She was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Lillie Mae Lewis, late husband Joseph H. Washington; Sisters: Lizzie Mae, Gold, Letha Mae, Eunice B and Edna Mae; Brothers: Joe, Sam, John L and Alec Lewis, Sons: Johnnie and Vincent Washington.

The family will receive guests Saturday, August 20, 2022 from 10:00 am - 11:00 am at Greater St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church, 416 Belmont Ave (419-244-2663). Funeral Services will begin Saturday at 11:00 am at the church. Burial will follow at Forest Cemetery.
