Thea (Dercho) Davenport

April 13, 1922 — April 28, 2018

Thea (Dercho) Davenport, 96, a longtime resident of LaSalle, MI, fell asleep in death on April 28th, 2018 after a prolonged struggle with dementia. Thea was born in Soviet Ukraine on April 13th, 1922 and during her early years endured many hardships including the Great Famine, Civil War, the kidnapping and loss of her father in the night by Russian Soldiers, and the intensity of World War II. These experiences produced inner-strength and an iron will that enabled her to survived despite life's challenges.

Thea met and married husband John, a Sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps, stationed in Germany in 1946/47. Shortly after, Thea began her new life in the United States by traveling via ship along her daughter Ellie, arriving through Ellis Island and finally becoming an American citizen in 1955.

Her early experience left her with many unanswered questions and after a careful study of the Bible, she found the answers she sought; a hope for the future and the skills needed to build a successful and happy life. She dedicated herself and was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses in 1958.

A tireless worker, Thea and John built their home block-by-block in LaSalle and enjoyed many happy years there. Every spring found her planting a large garden and many flowers. She was known as an excellent cook and enjoyed sharing an abundance of food with her loved ones, always with a hearty "Eat!" for emphasis. Her homemade pickles, beets, hoecakes and potato dumplings will be missed.

John and Thea traveled extensively together both internationally and on many cross-country trips. A favorite spot was Hot Springs, Arkansas where she enjoyed the thermal baths. They greatly enjoyed cruising the world together and experiencing the beauty of the earth. Thea lived a health conscience lifestyle and was very active well into her 80's – preferring to work than rest. In 1971, she obtained her certification as a Reflexologist and began life as a vegetarian.

She cherished her only daughter and four grandsons, doing everything possible to make sure their childhood was the very best. Thea was a hands-on grandma, always willing to play hide-and-seek, take the boys camping and on midnight sledding adventures.

Her daughter, Ellie Segur; grandsons, Jeffery, Jameson, Jonathan and Jathan; and one great-grandson, Benjamin, survive Thea. Her husband, John; brothers, Friedrich and Edgar; and one son-in-law, George, all precede her in death.

Services will be held at a later date. Newcomer – Northwest Chapel (419-473-0300) assisted the family arrangements. Those interested may contact a family member for more information.
