Sylvia M. Ulman, age 85, passed away peacefully on June 24 at Otterbein Monclova. She was born on May 11, 1933 to Emery and Anna Fabos. Her brother Emery James Fabos precedes her in death with her sisters, Ann Josserand and Rita Prebe surviving. Sylvia attended Central Catholic High School where she excelled and cherished her time spent performing in Central Catholic's band playing the clarinet and sax. Sylvia loved raising her six children, Catherine (David) LaGrange, Michael (Vickie), Paul (Lisa), Angela (Craig) Schaner, Cindy (Don) Cuneo, and Dianne (Gary) McLaughlin who survive her. She is also survived by many grandchildren, Peter Kolasinski, Stephanie Bidwell, Heather Robb Schook, Anthony Ulman, Cayla and Bryce Schaner, Emma and Keely Cuneo and Lexi McLaughlin and her great grandchildren, Leah, Logan and Madison.
Sylvia was a stay at home mom until her children were a little older. She had many challenging positions once she rejoined the work force at businesses such as Jobst, Witzler Shank and retired from H.H. Birkencamp. Sylvia loved children and taught Sunday school for many years at St. Rose parish in Perrysburg. She was a Cub Scout den mother as well as a Girl Scout leader. She enjoyed traveling in the U.S. and Europe. Singing had a special place in her heart and she performed with the German singing group, Teutonia Damenchor. She had great fun working at the German American Festival. Sylvia, during her working years belonged to American Business Women Association. Sylvia was an avid jig saw puzzle solver- the harder the better. When she was still able, gardening was her favorite hobby. She had a fondness for snowflakes, claiming they brought her good luck. She was an excellent pianist, enchanting all who heard her play. She delighted in hosting large family holiday dinners where everyone was welcome. Sylvia had fond memories of camping at Ludington State Park in Michigan and traveling cross country to Seattle with her daughter Dianne and granddaughter Lexi.
Sylvia grew up in "Hunky Town" a Hungarian community on the east side of Toledo. She married and moved to Perrysburg. Residing there for most of her adult life, she later moved to Tiffin, Ohio living in the Elizabeth Schaffer Apartments before moving in with her daughter, Catherine and son in law, Dave. Sylvia made the move with them to Whitehouse, Ohio. She became a resident of Otterbein Monclova in January 2016. Special thanks to staff at Otterbein, who really made it a home, Tracy of Visiting Angels, who always went above and beyond and to the staff of Northwest Ohio Hospice.
The family will receive guests on Sunday, July 1, 2018 from 4-8:00 p.m. at Newcomer – SW Chapel, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd., Toledo (419-381-1900). The Rosary Service will begin at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Monday at St. Patrick of Heatherdowns Parish, 4201 Heatherdowns Blvd.
