Sylvia Mae Fletcher DeBord, born July 4, 1925 in Sylvania, OH, went to be with her Lord May 19, 2023. She was a beautiful, kind, caring, creative & loving woman who was devoted to her family. Wesley Conrad DeBord, her husband of 60 years, passed away at age 79 in 2011. Her legacy will live on in her children, which included Doug (Sue) DeBord, Greg DeBord, Cheryl (the late John) Marino, Scott (Kathy) DeBord, and the late Ronald (still living, Gudren) Lucas. Sylvia graduated from Burnham High School in 1943.
Mom spent most of her life in Sylvania, OH. Growing up dirt poor, what they lacked in financial resources was made up for by familial love & sibling adventures. She and her sisters loved romance novels, big band orchestras, movie stars, drawing new fashion, & lots of dancing.
Approaching age 98 meant Mom was a product of "The Greatest Generation." She, like her peers, was motivated by a tenacity developed only in tough times. She persevered through the loss of her father when she was five years old, the Great Depression, World War Il, the Baby Boom, & also cancer. She was always willing to pull her own weight and even donned mechanic's overalls during World War Il to work on military aircraft. She was an actual "Rosey the Riveter."
For 9 years, Mom cared for her aging mother in-home, who was suffering with Dementia, 45 years ago. She would eventually lose all 9 siblings, her husband of 60 years, a son, 2 grandchildren & all her in-laws. Through it all she was always patient, kind, loving, considerate, smiling, hard at work & whistling. She had a way of looking at life that kept everything in perspective.
Known by Dad as the "Energizer Bunny," Mom had an endless energy that fueled her drive to clean, redecorate, or create. She was gifted in drawing, painting, sewing, & decorating & often used those talents to make costumes for church plays & creating teaching aids for Sunday School. Mom attended Westgate Chapel in Toledo OH where she enjoyed making quilts with the ladies or crafts as gifts. She enjoyed coloring, bead art, redecorating her house, wallpapering, & even mowing her grass in her early 90's. She was a very frugal person, but never miserly or stingy. We have never met a more giving person.
Mother's legacy will live on in her 4 surviving children, 14 grandchildren, several great grandchildren, & even a few great-great grandchildren. She was a remarkable human being that always had a kind word to say, never judged harshly, & always forgave. What a wonderful world this would be if everyone was like her.
Mom is in Heaven right now because of her belief in Jesus Christ & faith in His atoning work. She believed that her debt was paid in full by God Himself through the incarnation, life, death, burial, & victorious resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Our love for Mom will live on, & we will miss her dearly.
