Sue Wenzlaff PhD.

Sue Wenzlaff PhD., a beloved educator, debate coach, and advocate for animals, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2025, in her hometown of Toledo, Ohio. Born on June 9, 1955, Sue dedicated her life to nurturing young minds and promoting the art of debate, leaving an indelible mark on the students she taught.

Sue's career as a debate coach at Duquesne University was a highlight of her professional journey. She led the U.S. Debate Team in international competitions across the globe, sharing her passion for argumentation and rhetoric with countless young debaters. Her journey began in the classroom, where she taught at esteemed institutions including St. Francis High School, Defiance College, Austin Peay State University, and Wayne State University. Her educational accomplishments culminated in obtaining both her Master's and Doctorate degrees in Communications from Bowling Green University, a feat that she took immense pride in.

Beyond her professional achievements, Sue had a heart for wounded and abandoned animals, often opening her home to various cats and one special dog "lucky" over the years. Her compassion extended to her family, especially her nephews who she cherished and spent time with as they grew. Sue’s friendly demeanor and love for people made her beloved by all who knew her. She enjoyed lively conversations about her travels, participated in enthusiastic games of cards, and engaged in her favorite hobby of stamp collecting, a passion inherited from her father.

Sue will be dearly remembered by her surviving family members, including her sister Sandra Frank, her nephews Joshua and Jonathon Frank, her great-niece Jailyn Frank, and her great-nephew Boston Frank. She leaves behind her beloved cat, Homer, as well as a host of extended family and close friends who will miss her warmth and spirit.

A visitation will be held in Sue's honor on April 16, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM, followed by a memorial service from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home, Northwest Toledo. The address is 4150 W Laskey Rd, Toledo, Ohio, 43623.
