Stephen G. Engers

July 31, 1951 — April 29, 2022

Stephen G. "Steve" Engers, age 70, lifelong resident of Toledo, Ohio, passed away on Friday, April 29th, 2022, at Ebeid Hospice, surrounded by those he loved, after a year long courageous battle with cancer. Steve was born on July 31st, 1951, in Toledo, Ohio, to the late George and Maybelle (Henning) Engers.

A Graduate of Whitmer High School, he continued his education at the Ohio State Barber College and pursued his interest in men's hairstyling. Steve worked as a barber in the Toledo area for over 35 years, even owning his own shop at one time. He became a very talented barber throughout his career with many loyal clients, whom he also considered friends, before his medical retirement from Hanks Barbershop in 2006. In his younger years, Steve was an excellent pool player and disco dancer, and it's been said that "he had quite the moves" back in the day. Steve also spent many years as an active member of Glenwood Lutheran Church in Toledo, Ohio. He was a dedicated Christian man and his faith never wavered.

Steve was an avid Green Bay Packer fan, a lover of convertible cars, and freighter ships, similar to those his father would captain. He loved the water. He was fascinated with the beauty of lighthouses on the water. He enjoyed traveling with his wife to local beaches, parks, and taking day trips to Maumee Bay. He always looked forward to his visits with his family in Defiance and he loved them all dearly. He was a simple man who found pleasure and joy in just being around his friends and family. Steve was definitely a "people person" and he never met a stranger. He gave the best bear hugs and would sometimes squeeze so tightly to the point you had to ask him to let go. He was just an all-around great guy who adored his entire family. He was an amazing husband, father, step-father, grandfather, and uncle. He stepped in and became a father figure to his step-daughter and niece, treating them no differently than his own. The memories will remain in our hearts forever.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Debra "Debby" (Paeth) Engers, whom he married on June 3rd , 1989; daughter, Randi (Shawn) Earle, step-daughter, Jaime Paeth, and loving niece, who was like a daughter, Sarina (John) Storm. Grandchildren Jaycee Cameron, Austin and Haley Grant, and so many others that looked to him as a grandfather. Nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and loved ones whom will all truly miss him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his mother in law Mary Harkins, sister, Suzanne Bowen and brother in law Sherm Bowen, sister in law Linda Paeth, brother in law Mark Paeth and many aunts and uncles whom he was close to.

Family and Friends may gather at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 West Laskey Road, Toledo, Ohio 43623, on Tuesday, May 10th, 2022, from 10:00am-12:00pm, where his memorial service will take place at 12:00pm. Burial will take place at a later date at Toledo Memorial Park.
