Stanley L. Shirkey passed away on July 6, 2012 at the age of 88 from mantle cell lymphoma. He fought gallantly and remained positive to the very end that he would conquer the disease. Stanley lived on Harvest Lane in Toledo, Ohio from 1950 to present. He was born on November 10, 1923 and grew up in Delta Ohio.
After graduating from school he enlisted in the Army, and proudly served his country in the Pacific during WWII. After the war he returned to Toledo and began a career in the automotive industry. He worked his way from technician to service manager. Stanley created many advertising promotions and pioneered the implementation of "specialty technicians". He was one of the top managers in his field, winning many awards and recognitions. He worked at a number of automotive dealerships in the Toledo area, including Maumee Valley Dodge and Northwood Chrysler-Plymouth. He was also employed by Washington Local Schools in the maintenance department.
Stanley wanted things done the right way and strived to surround himself with those that shared this belief. He never cut corners or used inferior products. He would often say "Buy the best that you can afford". He believed that if you provided a customer the service that YOU would expect, they would return for more.
After he retired, he began a new career as a personal care giver for the late Mrs. Arndt of Whiteford-Center Rd. He tirelessly cared for her and her estate seven days a week for two decades. He tended to her every need with dedication and compassion.
He married Julia E. (Simpson) Shirkey in 1946. They gave birth to the love of their life, Carolyn in 1947. She and her husband George now live in Columbus. He is survived by his wife Julia, daughter Carolyn (George) Bittner, sister Donna (Harry) Tucker, nieces Teresa (Rick) Arredondo, Debbie Brocus, and Sherry (Kenny) Hartman. He was also blessed to have had the friendship of Mary Bellg and Mike and Judy Murphy. Especially Mike who worked so very hard to make sure that Stanley's last months were as comfortable as possible.
Thanks to everyone that touched Stanley's life. He cherished the cards and phone calls. Also, special thanks to Stanley's care givers, including the staff at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Flower Hospital, The Toledo Clinic and Drs. Jacob and Kasunic for their patience and compassion. The family has been told many times that Stanley was an inspiration to all, as he remained so positive and upbeat during his battle.
Visitation will be held from 2:00-3:00PM on Friday, July 13, at the Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 W. Laskey Rd., immediately followed by a memorial service.
Contributions in lieu of flowers may be given to the Toledo Area Humane Society, 1920 Indian Woods Circle, Maumee OH 43537, Hospice of Northwest Ohio, or a charity of the donor's choice.
