Shirley M. Gable, age 89, of Mt. Laurel, New Jersey, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 in Upland, California. Shirley was born on May 20, 1927 in Pittsburg, PA to William and Cleo Fields. She married on October 1, 1946 to Vincent Gable at Rosary Cathedral in Toledo. Shirley was a graduate of the University of Toledo with a Master's Degree in Special Education. She began her teaching career with the Toledo Catholic Diocese with a love of making a difference in the lives of children. Shirley continued teaching and retired from three school districts, Toledo Public Schools, San Bernardino County, CA and New Jersey retiring in 2002. Shirley's hobby's included photography, fishing and traveling from New Jersey to Toledo and to California each year. Amtrak was her favorite way of transportation in her many travels. Shirley lived her life to the fullest. She was a member of the New Jersey Red Hatters, Black Educator Association and the AARP Association and attended their conferences.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Vincent; great aunts; sisters, Genie Fields and Helen Lockett; brothers, Lloyd and Donald Fields; and granddaughters, Jamie Russell and Chelsea Gable. Shirley is survived by her loving children, Rodney Gable, of New York, Denise Murphy, of Toledo, Atty. Elise Traynum, of Oakland, CA, Dr. Marsha Gable, of San Diego, CA and S. Diane (Paris) Russell-Carter, of Upland, CA; grandsons, Emile Gable, of Oakland, CA, and Robert Gable of Chicago, IL; granddaughters, Melissa (Chris) Smith, of Toledo, Monique Triplett, of Winter Springs, FL, Erica Mosley, of New York, Tiffany Traynum, of Oakland, CA, and Delia (Adam Berkeley) Gable, of Tacoma, WA; great-grandchildren, Devin, Lauren, Jayson and William Triplett Jr.; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
The family will receive guests on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. at GESU Catholic Church, 2049 Parkside Blvd., Toledo, OH 43607 with a Mass of Christian Burial at 1:00 p.m. in the church. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery. The Newcomer Funeral Home – NW Chapel (419-473-0300) assisted the family with professional services.
