Shirley Jean Clay

September 8, 1936 — September 29, 2023

Shirley Jean Clay, age 87, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2023, at her home surrounded by love. Shirley was born September 8, 1936, in Roxboro, North Carolina, to the late Romie and Mary Bobbitt.

Shirley graduated from Person County High School in 1954. Following graduation, she moved to Toledo Ohio where she furthered her education at Mary Manse College, receiving her Bachelor's Degree in Education. She then went on to earn two Master's Degrees in Education and Education Specialist from the University of Toledo. With her love for teaching, she worked at Glenwood Elementary School, where she retired after 33 long and dedicated years. Though her heart was with education, she also endured various business adventures and opportunities throughout the years with her husband and son. Not only was she a hard worker at her jobs, but she also was prideful in tending to her home. When she wasn't caring for her family or home, she enjoyed traveling to new places, especially her trip throughout Europe, during her retirement.

Shirley had the biggest heart and would help anyone in need. She was proudly part of the Toledo Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Toledo Chapter of Charms Inc., and served as an usher for the Stranahan Theatre and Toledo Museum of Art. A woman of faith, she was an active member of All Saints Episcopal Church. She served as head of many committees including the women's group (ECW). She also loved seeing her son and grandchildren serve on the altar, read Scriptures, and play piano for special occasions.

Family was most important to Shirley. She was her son's biggest fan and would attend her grandchildren's extra curricular activities which included sports, dance, piano, guitar, church activities, and art classes. She also took great pride in hosting annual family gatherings at Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Those left to forever cherish her memory are her loving daughter-in-law, Lisa Krupa-Clay; grandchildren, Elizabeth (Michael) Volk, Alexander Clay, Sydney Clay, and Virginia (Marcus) Ashford; great grandchildren, Joseph, Raya, Michael Jr., and Isabella; and numerous nieces, nephews, and loved ones.

In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Amos Clay; son, Randy Clay; and three siblings, Romie Bobbitt Jr., Gearline Bobbitt Yancy, and Isabelle Hamlette.

A private family gathering will take place.
