Sergiy Derkachuk, age 51, of Toledo, Ohio passed away Friday, February 28, 2014 at Mercy St. Anne Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on February 9, 1963 to the late Dmitri and Ekateryna (Shumeiko) Derkachuk in Hotyn, Ukraine.
In 1985, he graduated from the University of Chernivtsi with a degree in Philology. Drawn to literature and writing, he began working as a journalist and moved up to editor for the Hotinski Vistnik Paper in Hotyn, Ukraine. His hobbies included music and soccer.
In 1996, Sergiy immigrated to the United States and became a naturalized citizen on November 18, 2005, one of his proudest moments. He had a keen sense of style and enjoyed shopping for vintage clothes at local shops, visiting local parks and spending time with his family. Sergiy worked at Parker Steel as an operator for the majority of his time spent in the Toledo area.
Sergiy is survived by his daughter Kateryna "Kate" (Aaron) and two grandchildren, Tommy and Gavin.
Sergiy will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
