Sandra Kay Jones

May 17, 1949 - December 1, 2020

Sandra Kay Jones was born in Toledo, Ohio, the first-born of eight brothers and sisters by her mother. She was preceded in death by her parents, mother Clara Elois Perry and father Alvin Stovall; siblings, Bernard Berry, Kent Berry, Harold McDonald, Jule Leon Berry and Linda Stovall Orr.

She is survived by daughter TaWonda A. Jones Williams (Tyrone) and son Maurice M. Jones, Sr. (Stacey), and a bonus son Carlos King, Sr. (Nikki); grandchildren, Maurice Jr., Mykayla, Lena, Carlos Jr., Trayvon, Nievette, Ashlee, Brandon and Jordyn; siblings, Connie Julious, Barbara Smith, Darryl Berry and Annie Faye Favors. And finally, by enduring friend and former husband Charlie A. Jones. Sandra and Charlie met over fifty-five years ago and married each other twice in this lifetime, on September 30, 1965 and September 30, 1995.

Sandra gave her life to Christ at an early age at Shiloh Baptist Church, Toledo OH and as an adult at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church, Toledo OH. She regularly played Aretha Franklin's acclaimed gospel album on Sundays and loved Bishop Rance Allen's music and preaching as well.

She graduated from Libby High School and St. Vincent's Hospital with an Associates as a Psychiatric Technician. Sandra was employed in mental health day treatment centers for over 25 years. She also was the owner of a fresh produce shop, called Sandra's Place, at the Toledo Market for several years in the early 2000s.

Sandra was fiercely dedicated to family; loved good food and music; appreciated fashion and modeling; proficient at gardening and cooking; and supported all forms of the Arts. Overall, she was very creative and eclectic, and excelled at singing, drawing, painting, pottery, crafts, sewing and crocheting. She just had a special classy, artistic touch. Sandra made sure the family participated in programs at the YWCA, Art Museum and Library that showcased these attributes.
She was a beautiful woman, known for being 'dressed to impress'. A professional shopper who practiced retail therapy to a fault. She could find a sale and a deal anywhere. Sandra liked everything that was 'white-white, crisp, spotless and pressed'. At the same time, she embraced vibrant, colorful African-inspired clothing and items. She was fond of birds, especially cardinals and blue jays.

Sandra was very particular about all things; everything had to be done just right. She would often say, 'If you are going to half do it, don't do it at all.' Presentation was also important to her. For example, when it came to food, she thought that people eat with their eyes first, so the appearance was the initial bite.

She was unapologetically black; and supported her people and the community. Always encouraged everyone to further their education and skills; to know your history and family; to travel and see the world; and desired that you do something with your life. She would read and watch primarily educational and 'deep' books, programs and movies (on PBS and CNN). Believed strongly in the power of voting, and even worked the polls on election day. Sandra always had political signs in the front yard and wanted to converse about current events and issues.

Sandra was strong-willed, quick and had a terrific sense of humor. She laughed and smiled with her entire face.

A mother's love is like a circle, it has no beginning and no ending. It keeps going around and around, ever expanding, touching everyone who comes in contact with it. Engulfing them like a morning's mist, warming them like the noontime sun, and covering them like a blanket of evening stars.

Special thank you to Ms. Stacey, her visiting nurse, for caring for, befriending and loving our mom.
