Sammie Lewis, Sr.

Sammie Lee Lewis, Sr. started his life journey on June 5, 1947, in Rosedale, Mississippi. He was born to James and Mattie Lewis. Throughout his life he was always loving and kind to all, his laugh and raspy voice made anyone smile.

Sam grew up as a young man in Rosedale Mississippi. At an early age, he met his soulmate and married the love of his life, Doris Lewis in 1966. From this marriage, 4 children were born and a bonus daughter. They later remarried and continued life until he departed.

Sam worked at Amoco, State Paper and Wortham Trucking for a while before moving on to his automotive business which began with his brother-in-law and best friend, Larry Scott. Prior to permanently settling in Toledo, he lived in Chicago for some time with family as well.

He enjoyed his MC Donald’s “big breakfast” and cup of coffee each morning. He enjoyed living in routine with his daily lottery tickets, Pepsi, sweets and Neapolitan ice cream.

Sam was preceding in death by his mother Mattie and father, James Lewis; brothers: Etta Lewis, David Lewis, Jimmy Lee Lewis, and sister, Dorothy (Dot) May Lewis; son, Nathaniel Lewis, stepdaughter, Sheila Scott.

Sam leaves to cherish his wife, Doris Lewis; sons: Sammie Lewis Jr. (Dana), Earnest Lewis, Rodney Lewis (Marlena); brother, Tommy James (Oma) Lewis and sister, Bernice Wolf; Grandchildren: Darius Lewis, Antonio Finch, Danielle Lewis, Davon Lewis, Nathaniel Lewis, Karina Middlebrooks, Selena Lewis, Kaliyah Lewis, and Janice Middlebrooks; 15 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Friends and family will be received at Northwestern Missionary Baptist Church, 1171 Oakwood Ave., Toledo, Ohio 43607 on Thursday, April 10, 2025 from 10:00 AM-11:00 AM with a funeral service at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.
