Russell I. Sturgill, Esq.
Russell Irving Sturgill, Esq., of Perrysburg, died at age 88 on May 9, 2016. He was born on December 7, 1927 in Toledo to the late Harrison Benjamin Sturgill and Grace Josephine (Suchomma) Sturgill. A graduate of DeVilbiss High School, he later earned a Bachelor of Laws from Toledo University and was a member of the Ohio State Bar. Russell briefly served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the American Legion. For 65 years, he served as the Secretary and General Counsel of Bennett Enterprises, Inc.
Russell was very proud of his grandchildren who include a Washington, D.C. attorney, a medical doctor, a chemical engineer and three other very successful grandchildren with university degrees.
He pursued a wide variety of hobbies, including earning his pilot's license at 18. He supported The University of Toledo athletics and in 1971, the championship football team recognized him for his help in recruiting and scouting. Russell enjoyed training and field trialing Labrador retrievers including serving as a charter member of the Maumee Valley Retriever Club. He loved skiing which he enjoyed in the USA, Canada, and Europe and golfing, which he started at age 12 and was once a member of Inverness Club. Russell served as the Chairman of the Board of Zoning and Appeals for 12 years in Jerusalem Township and in the same position for 14 years in Perrysburg Township.
He was preceded in death by his wives, Joan Edith Jacob and Leitha Bushroe. Russell is survived by his longtime companion, Sherryll Staiger; his brothers, Ronald and Dennis (Virginia) Sturgill; his daughters, Susan (Gary) Wilson and Diane (Glen) Williams; grandchildren, Bryan (Dana), Adam (Lesley), Christopher (Erin), Ashley (Shishir), Rachel (Hunter) and Benjamin; and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive guests on Wednesday from 4 – 7:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 W. Laskey Rd., Toledo (419-473-0300). Funeral Services will begin Thursday at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home. Interment will follow in Toledo Memorial Park.
