Rose Durant, age 66, a longtime resident of Toledo, formerly of New York City, passed away November 3rd, 2013 at Orchard Villa Nursing Home in Oregon, Ohio. Rose was born October 18th, 1947 to Benjamin and Anna (Cooper) Durant in New York City. She graduated from Waite High School in 1966 and went on to attend the University of Toledo where she completed her Associates Degree in Early Childhood Development. Rose was inducted into PHI THETA KAPPA Fraternity, Inc. She was employed with the UMADAOP: Urban Minority Alcoholism & Drug Abuse Outreach Program for several years. Rose was instrumental advocating for young women in the Toledo area for many years, something she felt very strongly about and supported throughout her life.
She loved crocheting afghans for all her family to enjoy. Rose was an avid collector of African Art and Literature, however she enjoyed reading many different authors and many different subjects, many of which she became well versed in. Rose was a devoted mother and grandmother cherishing time spent with her family. She also enjoyed traveling, especially to New York City.
In addition to her father, Rose was preceded in death by her brother, Larry Durant. She is survived by her loving mother, Anna Gardner, daughters, Arthenia Temple and Susan Durant; brother, Benjamin (Carolynne) Durant; sisters, LaDonna Hawkins, Carolyn Cooper, Sheila Layson, Barbara Epps and Linda (Remon) Peterson; grandchildren, Shawn and Xzavier.
The family will receive guests Wednesday, November 6th, from 4-6:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, SW Chapel, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd. (419-381-1900) where a Memorial Service will begin at 6:00 p.m. Officiating will be Pastor Benjamin Thomas.
