Ronald James Smith

July 25, 1940 — April 28, 2022

Ronald James Smith, age 81, resident of Sylvania, Ohio, passed away and went to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 28, 2022, at his home surrounded by those whom love him. He was born on July 25, 1940, in Sylvania, Ohio, to the late Lloyd E. and Theresa (Mittenmier) Smith.

Ron graduated from Sylvania-Burnham High School. He proudly served in the US Navy, from 1958-1961. He went on to become a police officer, where he had worked for the Toledo Police Department, retiring after 25 years. He was a proud member of the Police and Fire retirees of Ohio, Eagles, and Redman's Club. An animal lover, he loved his puppy, Panda. Ron enjoyed watching NASCAR, family gatherings, and taking care of his garden and yard. He kept up with his yard so much, that he received a certificate of "Best Lawn" from Sylvania Township. Most of all, family was most important. The time spent with them was something he looked forward to. He will forever be missed by all who knew him.

Those left to forever cherish his memory are his loving wife, Katherine E. (Starkey) Smith, whom he married on February 10, 2011; children, Dave Smith, Rich Smith, Debra Phillips, Tracy (Mark) Stykemain, Dennis (Stacey) Smith, Sally Osborn; two step-sons, Kirk (Lisa) Richards and Brian (Amy) Richards; nineteen grandchildren; twenty three grandchildren; and two sisters, Barbara Orth and Marjorie Powell.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Rusty Smith; and two brothers, John Smith and Robert "Bobby" Smith.

The family would like to express their love and gratitude to Hospice of Northwest Ohio and his two granddaughters, Christy Snyder and Sarah Stykemain, and The Ability Center of Greater Toledo. The care and love that they gave Ron during the end of his life journey will forever be remembered and appreciated.

Per Ron's wishes, cremation will take place and there will be no services held at this time. A special memory or online condolences may be expressed to the family by visiting www.NewcomerToledo.com.
