Ronald P. Sherrer, age 81, died on Saturday, June 21, 2018 at his home, surrounded by his family. He was born on September 21, 1936 in Mansfield, Ohio to Paul M. and Mildred E. Sherrer. Ron was a 1955 graduate of Mansfield Senior High School. He pursued athletics and played organized sports through high school, into college and in military service. Ron married his high-school sweetheart, Myrna G. Sorgen in 1956.
He was a 1960 graduate of the University of Toledo with a BA degree. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. He was commissioned a 2nd Lt. Infantry, in the U.S. Army in 1959. He served three years of active duty with the 1st Infantry Division. During his active duty he was a Special Duty coach of the 28th Infantry baseball team's 1961 season, and was Fort Riley's football coach for the 1962 season. Ron also pursued a military career by remaining with the active reserves for 27 years. He retired in 1989 with the rank of Colonel, Armor. He was a graduate of the Infantry School, Ft. Benning, GA; the Armor School, Ft. Knox, KY; Air Assault School at Ft. Campbell, KY; Command and General Staff, Ft. Leavenworth, KS and the Air War College at Maxwell Air Force Base, AL.
Returing home from active duty in 1963, he worked in the auto parts, heavy duty trucking industry for 37 years. He worked for Knauer Supply Co. first as general manager, then salesman, Vice President Sales then President Sales and then President. During his career in the auto parts industry he authored articles for the Young Executives Forum magazine of the Automotive Service Industry Association (A.S.I.A.) His writings were copywrited by A.S.I.A. He was a guest speaker at the A.S.I.A. conventions in Las Vegas in 1968 and 1970.
He established and promoted the King Craft Brand name for a product line that was sold throughout the country to the truck stop and truck fleet industries. Ron retired in 2001 after working for and overseeing the successful conclusion of Knauer Supply Company.
From 2002 to 2004 Ron was a volunteer advisor for Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity covering twenty-six active chapters. From 2003 to 2007 he was a member of the Advisory and Development Board for Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District which includes 16 counties, nine dams and twelve lakes in southeastern Ohio. At the time of his death he was chairman of the Idlewood Cottage Owners Association, a job from which he had been praying to be relieved since 1997.
Ron was a member of the Reserve Officer's Assn., University of Toledo Alumni Assn., Barton Smith F & AM Lodge #613, Zenobia Shrine Temple, B.P.O.E. Lodge #53 and Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Mildred Sherrer; wife of 59 years, Myrna Sherrer; brother, John; sisters, Rebecca Sherrer, Dorothy Durnwald and Mary Ellen Rosenlund. He is survived by his daughters, Ronda Sherrer and Lisa (Paul) Arnold; sons, Paul Sherrer and Rick (Lori) Sherrer; six grandchildren, Bradley (Frances) Hunkapiller, Lyndsey (Nick) Zielinski, Rick (Heather) Sherrer, Robert Sherrer, Cailyn and Devin Arnold; great-grandsons, Bradley, Jr. and Noami Hunkapiller; Blake and Jase Zielinski and Hayden Sherrer.
The family will receive guests on Friday, June 29, 2018 from 10 - 11:00 a.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home - Northwest Chapel, 4150 W. Laskey Rd. (419-473-0300) with his Funeral Service beginning at 11 a.m. in the funeral home. Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. in Mansfield Cemetery, Mansfield, Ohio (corner of Chestnut and Altamont Ave).
Memorial Contributions may be made to St. Matthew's Episcopal Church or to Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Ron's memory.
