Roger Eugene Horton, age 79 of Swanton, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 8, 2012 surrounded by his family. Born February 17, 1933 in Grenada, Mississippi, he came to Toledo in 1952 and met and married Ionia Miller. After serving in the Army during the Korean conflict, he joined MacKinnon-Parker, formerly Fred W. Entenman, where he spent 32 years as a cement finisher and later, Supervisor. Upon his retirement, he started Miller Construction, working in the Toledo and Southern Michigan area.
Roger was an active member of the American Legion and Laborers International Union Local 500 of AFL/CIO. He was also a member of Mt. Nebo Baptist Church for over 56 years, serving on the Usher Board and as a Trustee.
Roger was a kind, caring and supportive father, friend and husband, who enjoyed working on cars and his construction equipment and was very proud of his garden and the flowers in his yard.
He was preceded in death by both parents and one daughter Cynthia Jo. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 59 years, Ionia; one daughter Pamela (Leonard) Williams; two sons, Roger (Debora) Horton and Rodney (Jody) Horton; three sisters, Ann Delaney of Saginaw Michigan, Jessie Lewis and Shirley (James) Beal of Texarkana, Texas; six grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; special friends, Eddie and Marilyn Toles, Elondra Scott and Rodney Horton; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
The family will receive guests on Friday from 5 – 8:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd., Toledo (419-381-1900). Funeral Services will begin at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, 831 N. Detroit Ave., with Wake Services from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Interment will be at Historic Woodlawn Cemetery.
Memorial contributions in Roger's name may be made to Mt. Nebo Baptist Church.
