Roger H. Durdel, Sr.

July 19, 1938 — December 15, 2020

Roger Durdel, age 82, of Toledo, passed away on December 15, 2020 at Heatherdowns Rehab and Residential. He was born in Elmore, OH to the late Walter and Ester (Risch) Durdel on July 19, 1938. Roger graduated from Holland High School in 1957. That same year, he joined the 180th Air National Guard and served on active duty in 1961-1962 during the Berlin Call-up. He met the love of his life, Donna Jarosi, a few days before Halloween in 1958. That same night he stopped by his brother Merle's house to tell him "I met the girl I'm going to marry." On Halloween, Donna went to answer the door thinking it was trick-or-treaters, but there was Roger. They were married on September 3, 1960.

For 31 years, he was employed at Doehler-Jarvis. After retiring he worked part-time at Brodbeck's Greenhouse.

His hobbies included yard-work, wood-working, making and selling crafted items. On weekend camping trips and family vacations, he towed a travel trailer which led to out-of-the-way sites with pleasant and funny experiences.

Roger is survived by his loving wife, Donna, of 60 years; sons, Roger Jr. (Carol Moorehead), Anthony (Rita Jonaitis) of Fremont, IN; daughter, Joyce (Billy) Balante of Willboughy, OH; grandchildren, Roger III, Heather, Matthew Durdel of Escondido, CA, Kari (Jim) Naylor of Avon, OH, Kristen (Mike) Crum of Mentor, OH; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Loretta Durdel of Lake Charles, LA and Fran VandenBulke of Columbus, OH. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Merlyn and Emerson; sister-in-law, Helen Durdel and brother-in-law, Edward VandenBulke.

Per Roger's request there will be no services. He would like you to go enjoy the sites along the Maumee River or a walk in your favorite Metro-Park.
The family would like to thank all the nurses, aides and staff at Heatherdowns Rehab and Residential and everyone at Hospice of Northwest Ohio for all their support.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Cherry Street Mission or any local food bank. Roger believed no one should go hungry.
