Roberto D. Gonzalez, 66, of Toledo, passed peacefully on August 14, 2013 after putting up an impressive fight against a sudden illness. He was born in San Antonio, TX to the late Angela Franco and Roberto Gonzalez on September 6, 1946.
Roberto enjoyed growing up with sisters Teresa Monita, Lupe Castan~o, and Anna Goodreau. Memorably, he was chosen to play Sherlock Holmes in his grade school play. Roberto enlisted in the US Army and US Marines throughout 1963-1970. He valued these years of learning and service. From Michigan, throughout Ohio, and then settling in Toledo in the 80's, he began his life-long work in Latino Community Activism. He was integral in the field work and operations of La Raza Unida, the Ohio Governor's Migrant Affairs Committee, Maya Center, Guadalupe Center, and Lucas County Victim's Assistance among others. Roberto enjoyed fishing, grilling, reading and spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by many friends and an extensive family including Patti Cruz and daughter, Leanna Gonzalez. We love you always.
The family will receive guests on Sunday, August 18, 2013 from 3-8:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd., Toledo (419-381-1900). The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday in the funeral home. Fr. Juan Francisco Molina officiating.
