Robert C. Tomer
Robert C. Tomer, 71, died December 8, 2005 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio after living with cancer for 9 months. He was a born again Christian and a proud member of Cornerstone Church for 14 years. He was born and raised in Hudson, MI where his parents and family enjoyed watching him letter in basketball and football. He attended 4 years of college at Eastern Michigan and Adrian College where he also played basketball. He served in the Army for 2 years after high school at Fort Knox, KY and Fort Hood, TX and was a lifelong member of Hudson American Legion Post 180, who will be providing the graveside military salute. He was a pipefitter at Toledo GM Powertrain, retiring in 1999 after 32 years.
He is preceded in death by his sister, Patricia (John) Myers of Toledo who died of cancer in 1988 at the age of 58 and his parents Robert and Doris Tomer of Hudson, who died in 1989. His sister had 4 children and Uncle Bob spent many holidays at their big family gatherings. Along with Hospice, nieces Debbie (Alan) Fritz and Connie Fleury of Toledo cared for him during his illness. His younger brother Jack (Doris) Tomer lives in Kalamazoo, MI and has 3 children with families. Bob savored his extra visits from his brother, who stayed overnight with him several times during his illness. A family picnic of the Kalamazoo and Toledo families was held in Sept to celebrate his life. Bob was close with Jennifer (Dan) Pierce and family, of Cornerstone Church, who supported him in his Christian life and cared for him like family. Nurses and staff of Hospice of Northwest Ohio were very caring and supportive to Robert and the family during the entire 9 months of his illness.
The family will receive guests Tuesday, December 13, 2005 from 10-11 a.m. at Cornerstone Church, 1520 Reynolds Rd, Maumee, followed by funeral services beginning at 11 a.m. Graveside services at 2:30 p.m. at Maple Grove Cemetery, Hudson, MI. Robert would be honored by donations to Cornerstone Church, Hospice of Northwest Ohio, or Hudson American Legion Post 180.
