Robert Joseph Calkins

Robert Joseph Calkins, age 66, of Maumee, Ohio, passed away Saturday, August 17, 2013 in his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born August 28, 1946 in Toledo to Joseph and Genevieve Calkins. Bob was employed by Unitcast Corp. for almost 30 years, and upon their closing received certification in Phlebotomy, completing his career at UTMC.

His love of competitive athletics was evidenced early in his life on a "Bob-made" ice hockey rink in the backyard of his childhood home in the Old West End. He went on to coach several youth soccer, baseball and hockey teams. When soccer first gained popularity in Northwest Ohio, Bob positively impacted the lives of many youth through various volunteer positions with T.Y.S.A. and Maumee Express. Bob was also heavily involved in coaching both of his sons' various sports teams, winning many tournaments and championships. One of the soccer teams Bob coached, Westec Flyers, U-14 Division, went to the State Tournament and earned the State B Cup in the early 80's.

Bob was preceded in death by both of his parents and his son, Jeremy Joseph. He is survived by his loving wife Vicky (Loo), his sons, Robert "Goob" (Kristin) and Joel (Heather), and his sisters, JoAnne DeShetler, Judy Gable, Jeni (Jim) Jordan and Katie Fadell. He is also survived by his grandsons, Dakota, Keeghan, and Lukas Calkins, and Garrett Ody, who were the loves of his life.

The family will receive guests Tuesday, August 20, 2013 from 2:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. in the Newcomer Funeral Home, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd., Toledo (419-381-1900). Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lupus Foundation, Hospice of Northwest Ohio or The Foundation for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Per Bob's request, his final resting place will be in the Caribbean, where he enjoyed many visits with his wife and family.
