Robert C. "Bob" McIlvain, age 77, of Toledo, passed away on Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at his home where he was surrounded by his family. He was born on August 19, 1936 in Toledo, Ohio to Carl "Poncho" and Augusta "Gussie" (Schoettley) McIlvain. Bob was a graduate of Libbey High School and co-captain of the football team. Following high school he enrolled at the University of Toledo, graduating with a Bachelors of Education. For many years he worked for the Toledo Public School System, retiring in 1994. He started out as a teacher and later moved into data processing for the Board of Education. For many years he was the Treasurer for Toledo Teachers Credit Union. Bob was involved with many different activities within the school system, including being a wrestling coach and assistant football and basketball coach.
Some of Bob's interests included golfing, bowling, tennis, dogs, card playing (especially Bridge and Euchre), gambling, and his true passion was breeding and racing thoroughbred horses. At one time he owned a six acre stable that housed thirty-three horses. Bob put so much work and pride into designing the stables and pastures for these horses. He did name the driveway that lead to the stables as, "Susan Lane," hoping that it would appease his wife's interest in horses. Bob also enjoyed traveling.
His family will remember him for his quick wit and wonderful sense of humor, he was always thinking one step ahead.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Jennifer (Lynn) Heyman and Joni (Bob) Miller; grandchildren, Rob Miller (Adrienne Readel) and Corbin Miller (Tiffany Alexander); great-granddaughter, Avalynne Miller; brother, Earl (Winnie) McIlvain; sister-in-law, Sally Key and many nephews, nieces and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Susan (Key) McIlvain; brother-in-law, Pete Key and father and mother-in-law, Watson (Phyllis) Key.
