Robert Beggs, age 81, died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, March 20, 2007. He was born in Toledo on August 25, 1925 to Annabelle and Walter Beggs. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during the latter years of WWII. He was a Sea Bee in the naval reserves. At the end of the war, he finished his high school education at Farrington High School in Hawaii. He worked for 30 years for the U.S. Postal Service achieving the position of regional inspector. Upon his retirement from government service, he worked for AP Parts in Toledo. For many years he held part-time positions as a sales clerk at various shoe stores and in his 60's he became the owner of his own shoe store, Wild's Shoes in West Toledo.
He had a very gregarious personality and made many friends. As a young man Robert enjoyed sports and was on baseball and bowling leagues. In his retirement years he enjoyed traveling to Florida where he spent time at his home on Nettles Island. While there his enjoyment of sports continued as a participant in horseshoe competitions. As a member of St. James and later Grace Lutheran Church he was a member of the choir. He had a wonderful voice and the ladies of the congregation always looked forward to hearing his solos.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Marjorie; his three daughters; Teri (Richard) Kolb, Vickie (Gary) Schnapp, and Marjorie (Ron) Mason; six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Steven Schnapp, sister Evelyn and brother Raymond.
The family will receive guests on Friday, March 23, 2007 in the Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 W. Laskey Rd., (419-473-0300) from 2 – 8:00 p.m. Funeral Services will begin on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in the funeral home. Interment will follow in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.
