Richard Martin Hanlon, age 89, of Sylvania, Ohio died Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at home. Richard was born in Auburn, New York on March 4, 1921 to Emory and Mary (Mee) Hanlon. He was a World War II Veteran in the Army Signal Corps. He served in the European Theatre Operations in France, Belgium, Normandy Beach, England, Germany and Scotland. He was discharged in 1945, beginning a long career with the United States Government in different positions in Departments including the last five years with the Internal Revenue Service before retirement in June 1976 after 32 years of service. He was a member of VFW Post 2898 since 1992. Richard married his wife, Opal (Wineinger) Hanlon on September 5, 1981 at St. Clement Parish, Toledo, Ohio, where both remained members for many years.
Surviving Richard besides his wife is loving and supportive step-son, Larry C. (Audrey) Bland of Metamora, Ohio; step-daughter, Joyce Bland and husband, Luther Scarberry of W. Portsmouth, Ohio; special son-in-law, Roger Lee Parker of Toledo and the greatest nurse, step-daughter, Evelyn Parker of Springfield Township; fifteen precious step-grandchildren; twenty-three step-great grandchildren; two great-great step grandchildren.Oh the joy to have such a wonderful wife and her family.
Also surviving is a step-daughter, Valerie Bird of Hurricane, West Virginia by his first marriage of 17 years, Alice Walker Hanlon who died in 1977. Special nephew, E.J. Hanlon of Weed, California; nephew, Greg Hanlon of Califonia; nieces, Joyce Gemellara of New York; Alice Doyle of Campbell, California and Judith Kelly of Manzanita, Oregon; wonderful brother-in-law, Melvin (Sharon) Wineinger of Toledo, who was always there for the family. Preceding him in death are his parents; four brothers, Paul, Emory, Robert "Bob," Edward "Ned" Hanlon; one sister, Mary Kinsella.
Per Richard's wishes there will be no visitation or funeral service. Burial will be private at Toledo Memorial Park with Military Graveside Services provided by the Lucas County Veteran's Burial Corp.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of Richard.
