Richard G. Gwinner

May 30, 1928 — August 28, 2016

Richard G. "Dick" Gwinner, age 88, one of Toledo's finest golfer's, passed away on Sunday, August 28, 2016 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. He was born on May 30, 1928 to Elmer and Elma (Drafts) Gwinner in Toledo. Dick was a 1945 graduate of Libbey High School and attended the University of Toledo for Pre-Law. He was then drafted into the U.S. Army, serving in the 1st Calvary Division during the Korean War. Dick received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart for his service to his country.

Upon discharge from the military, Dick returned to Toledo and became a golf professional at Sylvania Country Club and then later at Bay View Golf Course. Golf was one of his ultimate passions in life. One of his proudest moments was shooting a 62 at Bay View Golf Course. His golf career spanned for more then 75 years, he had 10 holes-in-one, including 4 at his home course of Chippewa as well as a Double Eagle. His best advice was, "just keep practicing and never wear shorts, you need protection!" He was a life long fan of the Toledo Rockets, Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Tigers. Dick was most recently very involved and excited about the start up of Brickyard Sloppy Joe Sauce company by his Navy veteran grandson Don Jr., he was quite the salesman for the company!

In addition to golf, family life was important to him as well. Dick began working for Willys Overland in 1952 as a Payroll Supervisor and worked there until his retirement in 1995. He greatly loved his Jeep family, enough so that it kept him there for 43 years.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Judi (Dan) Gilreath and Jackie (Don) Hill; grandchildren, Heidi (Mike) Gallaher, Don, Jr. (April) Hill, Joe (Michelle) Gilreath and Julie (Ryan) Hakeos; great-grandchildren, Regan and Drew Gallaher, Bella and Lukas Hill, Joey Gilreath, Brooklyn and Harper Hakeos; special friends, Jane Mahan and Louie Osborn. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his three sons, Ricky, Rusty and David Gwinner; brother, Don Gwinner and former spouse of 14 years, JoAnn Tuman.

The family will receive guests on Thursday, September 1, 2016 from 2-7:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 W. Laskey Rd. (419-473-0300). Funeral Services will begin in the funeral home on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. followed by Military Services.
