Raymond L. Hassen, 90, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on May 11, 2014. He was born on March 6, 1924 to the late Hilda (Meiring) and Leo Hassen in Swanton, Ohio.
Ray was the second of six children and attended Ohio State until he was drafted in the U.S. Army during WWII. After his discharge, he acquired his Barber License from Toledo Barber School. Ray's Barbershop was located on Central Avenue in Sylvania Twp. His career lasted for 62 years until retirement at the age of 88. On June 24, 1950 he married Coeline Dippman of Oregon, Ohio. Together they raised five children. Ray was a life member of VFW Post 3717 and former Post Commander. He loved to garden, read books and play euchre. More than anything else, he loved having all of his children and grandchildren together for special occasions.
In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by his brother, Leo and son, James. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of almost 64 years, Coeline; children, John (Melody), Bonnie DeYoung-Gross, Vickie (David) Rockow, Thomas (Patti); daughter-in-law, Diane and their families including 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; siblings, Marian (Bill) Iott, Rose (Herbert) Bettinger, Bill Hassen, Lois Schmitz.
The family will receive guests on Thursday, May 15, 2014 from 2-8:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd., Toledo (419-381-1900). The Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday at Little Flower Catholic Church, 5562 Dorr St. Friends and family may visit from 10-11:00 a.m. at church. Burial will take place at St. Ignatius Cemetery in Oregon, Ohio.
