Raymond J. "Ray" Giles, age 83, of Toledo, passed away peacefully Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at the Franciscan Care Center with his loving family by his side. He was born on October 22, 1933 to William and Anna Giles in Toledo. Ray was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, serving during the Korean War. He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church. Ray retired from St. Vincent Medical Center as the financial planner, where he created the original employee pension plan. He also participated in the coordination of the initial Life Flight Program, which continues today. Ray was an avid reader, enjoyed cooking and loved his dogs. He was never seen without his loving wife Betty at his side. Ray will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Paul Giles; sisters, Anna Mae Wray, Phyllis Johnson, and Rita Hardy. Ray is survived by his beloved wife, Betty and they would have celebrated 60 years of marriage on October 26; children, William (Christine) Giles, Matthew (Sharon) Giles Sr. and Renee Crowder; grandchildren, Lisa (Eric), Michael, Erin, Jennifer (Jeff), Matt, Brian (Dymond), Kimberly, Amy, and Natalie; 13 great-grandchildren; brother, Don (Virginia) Giles; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
The family will receive guests on Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 W. Laskey Rd., Toledo (419-473-0300). A Memorial Mass will be held on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church, 4100 Harvest Lane, Toledo.
