Paul Leo Herman, II (“Baldy” to his close friends and family), age 80, passed away Saturday October 19, 2024, in Flower Hospital and joined his Heavenly Father. He was born in Toledo, Ohio on March 7, 1944, to Paul Leo Herman and Eunice Irene Fike.
Mr. Herman enlisted in the Navy during the Vietnam War and during his service he survived one of the most devastating fires in US Naval history. On July 29, 1967, the USS Forrestal was involved in a fire on its flight deck during the Vietnam War. The fire killed 134 sailors, injured 161, and destroyed more than 20 aircraft. Following active service and after returning from Vietnam, Mr. Herman remained in the Naval Reserves and graduated from the University of Toledo and earned a BS in business. Mr. Herman later went into the Army National Guard and went on to serve over 20 more years as a Combat Construction Engineer in the Ohio National Guard.
Mr. Herman was an accomplished carpenter and builder with Herman Brothers, Inc. Building Contractors of Sylvania, Ohio and along with his brothers built many schools, churches, and other commercial buildings in northwestern Ohio and southeastern Michigan, including St. Joseph’s Parish where he was an avid parishioner.
Baldy loved to have a good time and is remembered by those who knew him as having a great personality and a unique sense of humor. Mr. Herman was an avid fisherman; he also enjoyed vegetable gardening, and golfing.
Surviving Mr. Herman are his sisters, Valerie Rae Fatchett of Dexter, MI and Rose Mary (Tom) Campbell of Virginia and his brothers James R. Keane of Hillsboro, OH, Douglas Craig of Ann Arbor, MI, and Delbert Joseph (Anne) of Temperance, MI and his children Paul Thomas of Hernando, MS; Desdemona Lyn Franklin of Blythewood, SC; Charles Seaton of Savannah, GA; Shawn Eugene of Toledo, OH; and Shane Michael of Laveen, AZ.
Interment will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Sylvania, OH. Friends and family will gather at the graveside on Monday November 25, 2024 at 1 pm to celebrate his life.
