Otha B. Jefferson, born on January 3, 1950, in Lexington, Mississippi, passed away on the same date in 2025 in Toledo, Ohio. He led a life characterized by hard work, dedication to family, and a commitment to his passions. Retired from Toledo Pickling & Steel, Otha continued to contribute to his community by working in maintenance at Franklin Park Mall.
Otha was known for his remarkable personality, which shone through in his enjoyment of various hobbies. He had a passion for working on cars and a love for music, often seen playing his guitar. A natural storyteller, he had a unique way of captivating those around him, always aiming to bring joy and warmth into their lives. His integrity was reflected in his unwavering honesty and made it a point to ensure that everyone felt loved in his presence.
He cherished his family deeply, showing immense love for his wife, Shelia Buchanan, along with his daughters Diann Jefferson and Tammy (Edward) Coleman. Otha was also the proud father of Otha Jefferson Jr., Brandon Labiche, and Deontay (Abiola) Buchanan. Step-sons Greg Buchanan and Spencer Saunders were a significant part of his life, as were his beloved siblings—sisters Leola Jackson and Lucille (Larry) Zielinski and brother Willie (Beatrice) Jefferson. His legacy continues through many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will feel his absence profoundly. He will also be missed by his favorite nephews, Grayland Gunn and Jessie Johnson “Bug”, his favorite niece Rosetta “Peaches” along with his sister-in-law, Charmain Buchanan “Main”. Otha was preceded in death by parents, James and Sally Jefferson, his brothers Jessie Hicks, Rapert Hicks, John Hicks, William Jefferson, and Cleaster Jefferson, along with his sister Roxy Jefferson.
The family would like to give a special thanks to nurse, LaToya Dunklin and Heatherdowns Rehab & Residential for the superior care provided to Otha.
A funeral service will be held on January 14, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Newcomer Funeral Home, Southwest Toledo, located at 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd, Toledo, Ohio 43614. Burial will follow at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.
