Ora Lee Ellis

February 12, 1926 — March 2, 2021

Ora Lee (Jones) Ellis was born February 12, 1926 in Greenville, South Carolina, to the proud parents of O.D. and Martha Jones. She gained her wings on March 2, 2021, in the comfort of her home at the age of 95, in the company of her loving caretaker/daughter Regina.

She was a 1944 graduate of Scott High School. Ora Lee met the love of her life, Oscar Ellis and united in Holy matrimony, November 23rd, 1944. Out of this loving union, 4 children were born: Oscar Jr., Gregory, Bonita and Regina Ellis.

Ora Lee confessed to loving Christ at an early age. She attended Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Toledo, Ohio under the pastorate of the late Rev. Elijah Benton. Later she renewed her membership at First Missionary Baptist Church, Swanton, Ohio under the leadership of Rev. Fred Blanton. Being a diligent servant, she honored the Lord, by being a loyal, faithful and dedicated member, serving on the Missionary Board, Hospitality and various committees. Mother Ellis was truly loved, cherished and respected by the members of her church. She made it known that she loved, respected and honored God. Her favorite scripture was the 23rd Psalms.

In April 2002, she retired from the Toledo Board of Education after many years of service. She was lastly employed at Rogers High School and was admired and loved by the Staff and the students.

Her community affiliations consisted of the following fraternal organizations; she was a 70-year member of Jewel Chapter #20, Order of the Eastern Stars and in 1990 was elected as Worthy Matron. In 1990 and 1991 she was appointed Grand Hospitality Committee member. Ora Lee was a Past Most Ancient Matron of Ruth Court #6 Heroines of Jericho, and in 1988 was Grand Queen. She was a Past Loyal Lady Ruler of La Paz Assembly #35, The Order of The Golden Circle. Also, in 1991 Ora Lee was nominated as the Illustrious Commandress of Mecca Court #73 Daughter of Isis.

While residing in Toledo, Ohio she assisted in the development of an enclosed Roosevelt swimming pool. Creating an environment, where children in the surrounding areas could swim all year round.

Together with her husband Oscar Ellis and other caring parents and friends, the Scott Booster Club was created. During that time, the purpose of this club was to be supportive to the athletic department of Scott High School.

Her community involvement did not stop. After relocating to Spencer Township in Holland, Ohio, Ora Lee dedicated her energy to support her husband, Oscar. He held the positions of Zoning Inspector and his 8-year tenure as Township Trustee. For several years Ora Lee was an avid political poll worker as a Presiding Judge.

Ora Lee had no problem sharing her excellent cooking skills. Always offering her helping hands to those in need, and her loving personality was impeccable. The affection she had for her family and friends will never be forgotten!

She was every sense of the word a "Phenomenal Woman" and a "Phenomenal Mother".

She was preceded in death, by her loving husband of 45 years, Oscar Ellis Sr.; parents, O. D. and Martha Jones; sister, Margaret Bishop; son, Gregory Ellis and two grandchildren, Bryan Keith and Kevin Chad Ellis.

Ora Lee leaves to cherish her loving memories, one son, Oscar (Sharon) Ellis, Jr. of Toledo, OH; two daughters, Bonita Davis of Toledo, OH and Regina Ellis of Holland, OH; 4 grandchildren, Gregory Dwayne (Starla) Ellis, of Monroe, MI, Derek Andre (Christina) Ellis of Toledo, OH, Ahneetra Renee and Alisha Marie Davis, both of Toledo, OH; 6 great grandchildren, Bryan Blake Anderson Ellis, Jordan Michael Ellis, Nicholas Martinez, Breana Rachel'Marie Ellis, Joshua Oscar Ellis and Constance Monique Davis Brewster, all of Toledo, OH; 1 great great grandchild, Niko Martinez of Toledo, OH and a host of nephews, nieces and other family and friends, all whom she loved and lived for.
