The Polish prince went home to join his ma & pa, brothers and sister on June 11, 2012 after a courageous battle with cancer. Norm was born in Dearborn, Michigan on January 23, 1929 and raised here in Toledo Ohio.
He was a larger than life man with a voice to match. Norm was a proud US Army veteran, serving in Japan during the war. Upon returning to Toledo, he held numerous jobs. Finding his niche with the Standard oil company, he opened and ran the first car wash in Toledo Ohio. He remained with Standard Oil/SOHIO for 40+ years. After retirement he still needed something to do, working at the Jackman and Laskey car wash (lending his expertise as a subject matter expert). On March 24, 1966 he married the love of his life, Frances Melvina Brooks. With their empty nest and open hearts, they took in John Merritt, who became their son. John provided them with the joy and happiness of family.
Norm was always there when someone needed him. Anything from being a chaperone on field trips, Drivers Ed Instructor to driver to whoever was in need of a lift and an always constant companion.
Norm was proceeded in death by his parents, Stanley and Bertha Kanderski; brothers, Stanley II and Richard; sister, Alice Dudek.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 46 years, Frances; son, John (Shelley) Merritt; daughter Sue (Dave) Cranfill; grandchildren, Jeremy (Lacey) Merritt, Amanda (Kevin) Benefield, Tiffany (Dan) Brewer, Kyle Cranfill; great grandchildren, Zachary, Lauren and Jacqueline Benefield; special family, June (Randy) Krieger, Jeannette Merritt, Colleen Kaser, Dale (Janice) Bernard; his entire Kentucky family; many nieces and nephews and especially his four-legged buddy, Tommy. Norm was a buddy to all that knew him.
The family will receive guests on Thursday from 2-8:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd. (419-381-1900). A funeral service will begin on Friday at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home. Fr. Paul and Pastor Brent Johnson officiating.
Special thank you to his workout buddies at Cardiac Rehab at MCO and Dr. Skeel and Staff, Infusion Center and Hospice of Northwest Ohio for such excellent care.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
