Nicholas A. "Nick" Athanitis, age 85, of Sylvania, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 12, 2024 at Kingston Care Center of Sylvania. He was born on September 28, 1938 to Andrew and Lucille (Bertani) Athanitis in Joliet, Illinois. Nick was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving his country proudly. He worked as a safety engineer at various places throughout his career, but retired from Sun Oil after many years of dedicated service. Nick was a longtime member of St. Patrick Providence, Grand Rapids, OH, the American Legion, Whitehouse, OH and the Chamber of Commerce, Oregon, OH.
Nick enjoyed gardening and bowled for many years on a league as well. After retirement, he liked working in the yard and around the house. One of his greatest passions was his fitness and working out. Nick was an avid traveler, abroad and even making it to all 50 U.S. states.
He had a love of dogs, spending time with his family; especially his wife, children and grandchildren. Nick's caring heart, smile and spirit will truly be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. Left to cherish Nick's memory are his loving wife of almost 61 years, Pat Athanitis; children, Janet Pouter, Ronald (Chiori) Athanitis and Robert (Debbie) Athanitis; grandchildren, Kevin and Kaitlyn Pouter and Nichole and Zachary Athanitis; sister-in-law, Phyllis Combs; nephews, Michael and Greg Combs; and many dear friends.
There will be no visitation for Nick. A Memorial Mass will be held Monday, April 29, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Parish – Holy Family Chapel, 5411 Main St., Sylvania, OH 43560. Inurnment will be private. Newcomer Funeral Home – West Sylvania Chapel, Toledo, OH (419-392-9500) assisted the family with professional services.
