Nelda Mary Reno, age 87, of Sylvania, passed away peacefully Wednesday, December 30, 2020, in her home with loving family by her side. She was born on January 3, 1933 to John and Ruth (Griewahn) Schmidt in Deerfield, Michigan. Nelda was a 1950 graduate of Blissfield High School. She had a very strong work ethic, working full time her whole adult life as a waitress and then office manager for the Red Cross. After retirement she took charge of organizing events for her neighbors in the Mayberry Village apartments, and she planned the music programs for church. She played organ for Zion Lutheran Church, and later played piano for Family of Peace Lutheran Church, both of Ottawa Lake, MI. She was a member and served on the executive board of the Ohio Theatre for many years and was also a member of Toledo Area Theatre Organ Society.
Nelda was on bowling and golfing leagues and enjoyed playing cards, board games, doing puzzles and reading a good mystery novel. She also crocheted many afghans for family members over the years and she also loved to travel.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Reno; and brothers, Harold, Irvin, Albert and Frederick Schmidt.
Nelda is survived by her 5 children, Vickie (Jeff) Riordan, Valerie Carleski, Robert (Laurie) Carleski, Vanessa (Mike) Starkey and Veronica (Brad) Oster; 12 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren with the 33rd due in March; and 3 great-great-grandchildren with the 4th due in March. She is also survived by many other cherished family members and friends.
Visitation will be on Friday, January 8, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home – West Sylvania Chapel, 3655 King Rd., Toledo, OH; with Funeral Services beginning at 12:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Entombment will follow at Toledo Memorial Park. (For the safety of all, masks are required with social distancing).
