Nadji Marguerite (Shugart) Houghton was born on December 29, 1932 in Traverse City, MI to Clarence and Cecilia (Gagnon) Shugart. She married the love of her life, LeRoy Houghton, on July 4, 1952 at the old St. Francis Church in Traverse City after a brief three-day courtship. They were able to celebrate their 70th anniversary this past July.
Together they had five children: Nina Houghton, Christina (Scott) Reynolds, Liana (Michael) Bomar, Trista (Mark) Young and Royce (Michele) Houghton; two very special "bonus" daughters for the past 54 years, Anne (Blake) Leitnick-Watkiss and Pam Dixon; and a "daughter in their later years", Kesha Phillips. Nadji was the very proud grandma to 12 beautiful people and even prouder great-grandma "GG-ma" to 13 wonderful little ones; and precious sister-in-law, Kayren Houghton Campbell, of Alden, MI.
Nadji was a budding concert pianist before giving that up to marry, having studied at the Julius Hartt Conservatory of The Juilliard School. But she continued her music by teaching piano and voice for 30 years. Nadji was an avid seamstress, knitter, crocheter and baker. Her greatest love was her family; they meant everything to her. Nadji's smile, spirit and caring nature will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her.
