The man, the myth, the legend: Michael D. Zawacki. His "one day closer to death" has arrived. He died on January 16, 2022, not from a courageous battle with death (or COVID-19) but by being a stubborn Polish man and refusing to listen to doctors. Instead, he raised hell for 70 years. Mike was born to Stanley and Clara (Kubiak) Zawacki and was raised in Toledo's Polish village; and a village it took to keep him in line in his youth. Mike worked for Columbia Gas Company for over 35 years before retirement. Mike battled many demons, but never missed work or his kids' activities. Dad loved his family, music, his dogs, squirrels, his cars, Hallmark movies, OSU, The Browns, and The Indians. On Sundays, you could find him smoking a cigar, washing his cars, and listening to a game on the radio.
Mike leaves behind his amazing wife of 49 years, Darlene (Osenbaugh); daughters, Julie (Joe Nagy) David, and Christine (Mike) Nuhfer; and his namesake son, Mike Jr. (Haley); grandchildren, Alexis and Morgan David, Lizzie and Spencer Nuhfer; sister, Kathy Zawacki-Fisher; niece and goddaughter, Emily Fisher; and a host of many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
We would like to thank all the staff at St. Anne's, St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, and Regency Hospital for all their kindness and care.
The family will receive guests on Wednesday, January 26, 2022 from 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home – Northwest Chapel, 4150 W. Laskey Rd., Toledo (419-473-0300) with a Celebration of Life honoring Mike beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Masks are required please.
