Michael J. "Mike" Calmes, of Maumee, passed away on Tuesday, May 21, 2013, after a courageous battle with renal cancer, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg where he was surrounded by his loving family. He was born on February 21, 1950 in Toledo, OH to John E. and Laurine (Pollauf) Calmes. Mike was a 1968 graduate of Lake High School and a 1972 graduate of the University of Toledo. He worked at Wacker Chemical for nearly 12 years, retiring in 2011 due to his illness. Mike was an avid sports fan, particularly of his Ohio State Buckeyes and Detroit Tigers. He spent many years coaching basketball for Sylvania Area Recreation, where he was a mentor to many young aspiring athletes. In his spare time he could be found reading, enjoying the outdoors, going on long bike rides and spending time with his family and friends. Mike was an avid historian, who had a special interest in the Civil War. He was a member of St. Joan of Arc Parish and was a devout Catholic throughout his life.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 36 years, Debbie, and his two children, Steven and Stephanie. Also surviving are his siblings, Donna (Dave) Mraz, Dan Calmes, Connie Calmes and Colleen Barenbrugge; many nieces, nephews and a host of wonderful friends and co-workers. He was preceded in death by his parents.
The family will receive guests on Friday, May 24, 2013 from 2:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd. (419-381-1900). A Scripture Service will be held in the funeral home on Friday at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Services will begin in the funeral home on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. with a Funeral Mass to follow at St. Joan of Arc Parish, 5856 Heatherdowns Blvd. at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow in Lake Township Cemetery.
