Michael Gilbert, Sr.

Michael Gilbert Sr. departed this life on Saturday, February 8, 2025, after succumbing to chronic health conditions. He was born to Margaret (Hill) Gilbert and James Dunning on August 30,1954 in Toledo, OH. Most known for his tall stature, soothing baritone voice, and a passion for his family, he will be greatly missed. 

Michael graduated from DeVilbiss High School in 1972 and went on to pursue a career as a laborer in the manufacturing industry until the loss of his eyesight dictated his retirement in 1996. Most notable were his positions at Owens-Illinois as a Shipment Supervisor and his final position at Doehler Jarvis as a Process Technician.

He loved good food, music, fishing, and to be with his family. Despite losing his sight, he enjoyed hearing the house full of laughs and good times. Throughout his life, he became the family historian. If you needed to factcheck who was where, said what, or when someone was born, he would know. Reminiscing and storytelling were among his favorite pastimes. He was a bright man that instinctively understood always having a plan A and B. He was fiercely protective of his children and never stopped being “Dad/Pops”. 

Michael leaves many to cherish his memory including his children: Ronald (Jovaelis) Neely, Richard (Tiffany) Neely, Michael Gilbert Jr., Aaron Gilbert Sr., Brandi (Carl) Gilbert-Hammett, Mariah Gilbert, and Carmello Gilbert. 13 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Avis, his parents, and his sister Julie Dunning. 

The family will receive guests Tuesday, February 18, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Newcomer – SW Chapel (4752 Heatherdowns Blvd. Toledo, OH 43614). Funeral services will begin Tuesday at 12:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Forrest Cemetery.
